March 2019 - NGC 2158

NGC 2158 is an interesting open star cluster because it is in the same field as M35, located in Gemini.

Like the more famous Double-Cluster, this pair is also unrelated. A line of sight group.

Many observers miss NGC 2158 while observing M35 because it is small and overpowered by it’s more famous companion. By itself it might be a nice little cluster.

It is 16,000 light years from Earth and about 9,000 light years further away from M35.

The next time you observe, look for this little cluster among the stars of Messier 35.
